To
we attended a class field trip to the city of Siena. Our first stop was at the
Crystal Palace Museum and to me this stop was very meaningful because i came
out knowing more than what I went in knowing. At the Crystal Palace we came
around to the story of Pinocchio a story I heard during my childhood. The story
of a little string puppet whose nose would grow after each lie. The author of
Pinocchio wanted to be a priest, but ended up making the story into a series of
episodes, magazines and a book. Also there is a fountain that squirted like the
shape of the nose of Pinocchio and it is believed that that is where he built
his inspiration. He published a magazine in 1881 and a book in 1883. To me this
is significant in the way I never really knew where the story originated and I
would had never known i was in the town where the author was inspired to write
the story and after hearing about it, it made more sense to me why there where
many Pinocchio souvenirs in the cities of Italy that I have visited so far.
After
attending the Crystal Palace we headed towards the Fabrica del Panforte. A kind
of dessert I had no idea what it was but found out it was a great source of
giving energy during the 13th century. During this time it could be said for
spices to be as important as gold. I personally did not like the panforte. When
you take first bite it basically dissolves in your mouth but the after taste
was what I didn't like. There were multiple kinds of panforte and cookies.
Along
with the first two wonderful stops we made one final stop and a very unique one
at the Cathedral in Siena. To me this stop was unique because I am catholic as
well as my family and we have images and sculptures of Virgin Marie. The
cathedral in Siena was dedicated to Virgin Marie. Because when Florence was
trying to invade Siena they prayed to her so she would help them win the war
and if they won they would make her the patron of the cathedral. One thing that
grabbed my attention was that this cathedral was made with more of a gothic
style as well as medieval. In this cathedral also stood a very important
sculpture that was created by Michelangelo. In this city Virgin Marie was the
symbolism of Freedom, independence and peace. A lot of the Frescos inside the
cathedral were not only significant but also rare to find during the 14th
century. Rulers that were ruling during this era were switching every two
months and the king was working with nine virtues. Justice had to be done with
good ideas. During its time the Virgin Marie wasn’t telling anyone to pray for
her all she asked for was to protect the city from justice. In Siena horseracing
takes place but it was only for the rich people. It took place during July2 and
August 16 in honor to celebrate the assumption of Virgin
Marie. Siena was divided into 17 districts and for people that lived in an
enemy district that wife and husband couldn’t live together. Also once
Michelangelo’s protectant dies he could no longer live in Florence and moved to
Bologna which years later he returned to Florence to complete the statue of
David.
